She bangs!

My wedding hair was a total accident. Let me explain.

My sister-in-law is also my stylist. About a month before we left for our trip, she did a hair trial for me so that I could photograph it and take the pictures along with me to show whoever was assigned to do my hair at the resort. J is an artist when it comes to this sort of thing and her results were beautiful and beachy, but also simple enough that I felt confident Resort Stylist would be able to copy it. I took about 20 photos of it from every possible angle blown up to 8×10 size just to make sure I got my point across.

Well it turned out to be a whole lot of effort for nothing. Resort Stylist was really nice, don’t get me wrong. But when she took an exactly 1 millisecond glance through my packet of hairstyle pictures and then started assaulting my head with a curling iron and bobby pins, I knew it wasn’t going to end well. She had me turned away from the mirror so I couldn’t see what was going on and in hindsight I probably should have said anything to stop her. Instead, much like the hairtastrophe of 2005, I just sat there like a fool and let it happen to me. The results were not good. Half my hair ended up pulled back in a tight enough bun that it looked like I had had my eyes done, while the rest of it was curled into tight Shirley Temple ringlets.

I was thisclose to a major freak out, but instead I forced a smile, thanked her and practically fell out of the salon chair in my hurry to get out of there before I went Bridezilla on her ass. I did not take photos of it because it was that bad and all I could think about was how much I needed a drink.

20 minutes later, I had a big glass of rum disguised as a strawberry daiquiri and was finishing pulling enough bobby pins out of my hair that you could probably have stuck refrigerator magnets to my head, while M tried to convince me of how pretty I was. I ran my fingers through it to loosen up those idiotic curls and looked in the mirror. And it wasn’t so terrible! I added my feathery flower fascinator and voila! It wasn’t the original half-up do that I wanted, but it looked really pretty and since I knew that Resort Stylist could at least operate a curling iron, it would be a cinch for her to recreate, even if I had to pull half the curls out by myself. Problem solved and that is how my wedding style came to be.

Any’do, fast forward to yesterday and I was retelling this horror story to my sister-in-law (who is now the only person allowed near my hair for the rest of my life) while sitting in her home salon deciding what to do for my post-wedding chop. Like many brides, I made sure to leave my hair alone for the months leading up to the wedding (no cutting…no dyeing), and now I desperately wanted to change it up. Many women hack it all off, but this would not be happening in my case because let’s just say that short hair and my face don’t get along. So once again, I left her with free reign and felt totally comfortable doing so. J would never doom me to a life of wearing hats for three months like crazy-eyes in California did.

And check it out!

As many times as I’ve failed at bangs before, I think they might actually be working for me for once! And now that the wedding is over, the possibilities for my hair are endless. Purple streaks for football season, maybe?

When was the last time you did a hairstyle overhaul? If you’re engaged/married, what are/were your wedding day hair plans? Are you doing/did you do something drastic with it after the big day?

You are 1 of like 5 people I know who can pull off bangs. That is so super cute. Get ready to get carded. A LOT. I didn’t remember that wedding hair was not the same as trial hair but I did think your wedding hair was GORGEOUS. Very relaxed, very beachy. I didn’t remember your hair being so dark. Did she put any color on it? I am ALL for purple streaks for football season…and don’t listen to Kelly – no clip-ons! Go for the real meal deal! I had pink for awhile.

My most drastic hair change was when Neal deployed and I went from blonde to deep red with black streaks. I’ll dig those out and post them someday. It took 2 years, but I’m finally back to being mostly blonde. My entirely family is doing the dance of joy. I kind of miss the red, though…

She gave you a Jane Austen hairdo! Yikes; I would have cried…I’m proud of you.

I *LOVE* how these bangs look on you! They’re great. And your wedding hair looked fantastic too, good work getting out all the bobbie pins!
